Breast Lift

What is breast lift surgery?

Commonly referred to as a breast lift or boob lift, mastopexy surgery raises, firms and cones the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

A woman's breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape, volume, and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity deflate the breast and can result from: pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity, and can be heredity. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.

Unfortunatley, breast lifts don't significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller, consider a breast lift with an augmentation using silicone or saline implants. If you want smaller breasts, consider combining breast lift and reduction surgery. Breast lift surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. A breast lift is a good option for you if are

  • physically healthy and maintain a stable weight, do not smoke,
  • have realistic expectations, are bothered by the feeling that your breasts sag, and /or have lost shape and volume.

Furthermore, if your breasts have a flat, elongated shape or are pendulous and when unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease. Breast lifts are also options for women with nipples and areolas point downward, have stretched skin and enlarged areolas, or one breast is lower than the other. Breast lift surgery is usually an outpatient procedure lasting 1-3 hours and recovery requires several weeks. Returning to work and activities of daily living is dependent on work responsibilities and each individual but is usually one week. Complications are rare but include bleeding, infection, open wounds requiring wound care, loss of nipple sensation, nipple partial and complete loss, visible scaring, and asymmetry which all requires additional procedures and costs. The cost is extremely variable and depends on the patient’s exam, complexity of the breast lift, and implants if required.
