Gynecomastia, or enlarged breast tissue development, is the result of a hormonal imbalance, obesity or genetics, and can affect men of all ages. While gynecomastia is not a life-threatening condition and may correct itself over time, cosmetic surgery is a safe, effective step men can take to remove excess chest fat and skin. Gynecomastia surgery is also known as “breast reduction surgery” or “reduction mammoplasty.”

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Candidates for gynecomastia surgery should meet the following criteria:

  • Carry a healthy BMI (body mass index)
  • Maintain an active lifestyle
  • Are over the age of 18 (Teenagers may suffer from breast enlargement due to puberty, so it’s advised to wait and allow natural regression of breast tissue first.)
  • Have healthy expectations for surgery
  • Do not have a serious or life-threatening medical condition

To prepare the patient for gynecomastia surgery, the surgeon will administer either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, depending on what’s best for his individual needs.

Once the patient is sedated, a surgeon will use liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue; Excision techniques may be employed if glandular breast tissue or excess skin is more prominent. If the patient’s gynecomastia is a combination of excess tissue and skin, the surgeon may use both liposuction and excision techniques.

Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery

The surgeon will recommend an appropriate plan for recovery, depending on the severity of the gynecomastia and complexity of the procedure. At the start of the process, dressings and bandages are usually wrapped along the incisions to reduce swelling and provide support to the chest region. If necessary, a thin tube will be placed under the chest skin to drain any excess blood or fluid.

The surgeon will also provide instructions regarding which medications and antibiotics to take, how to prevent infections, and when the patient can resume physical activity. Recovery time varies from man to man, but normal activities may recommence within a few weeks.

The cost of gynecomastia surgery will vary depending on the region, the doctor and the severity of the condition. Most insurance companies consider gynecomastia surgery a cosmetic procedure, and therefore do not cover any costs. But it is still worth checking with your insurance company to see if there is anything available for the procedure.
