How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Posted in Uncategorized

Women who undergo breast surgery should understand that breast implants do not last forever. So, how long do breast implants last? While there is no average lifespan for breast implants, most surgeons will tell you they typically last 10-20 years. But there are several factors that can affect that timeline.

Types of Breast Implants

Breast implants come in two varieties, saline and silicone. Saline implants are inserted empty and then filled with sterile salt water. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel which has a similar feel to natural breast tissue. There’s no consensus as to which type lasts longer, simply because so many factors can impact the lifespan of an implant.

Overfilling or underfilling saline implants during surgery can change the desired shape of the implant and make it prone to leaking. Leaking saline solution is absorbed by the patient’s body and will pose no health risks, leaving time for the implant to be removed and replaced.

Silicone implants are susceptible to ruptures as well, as Dr. Livingston shows in this short video.
