Eyelid Surgery

Due to factors that may include heredity, age, or stress, facial appearances may begin to look drained and aged. Many times, the upper and lower eyelids are the first to show these signs of aging. A main feature of our face, tired eyes can make patients look older than they are.

A nearly scar-free procedure, this procedure, otherwise known as "blepharoplasty," can treat a number of imperfections, such as:

  • Sagging or loose skin present on the upper and lower eyelids
  • Bags beneath the eyes
  • Wrinkles around and in the lower eyelids
  • Poor lower eyelid position
  • Excess fatty deposits on the upper eyelids

After accessing and analyzing each individual, Dr. Livingston will determine whether upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both will help you achieve a refreshed look.

Whether you are in your 30s or older, eyelid surgery can help you attain a younger appearance, and in some cases, provide better vision; free from drooping upper eyelids.

Procedural Steps:

By first providing the Houston eyelid surgery patients with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, Dr. Livingston will ensure a pain-fee experience during the patient's procedure.

Should Dr. Livingston and the patient both decide, upper eyelid surgery may be performed by first creating an incision on the upper eyelid creases through which fat may be removed, tissue and muscles will be tightened, and excess skin will be removed.

Lower eyelid surgery may also be performed alone, or in conjunction with upper eyelid surgery, by creating a small incision below the lower eyelashes to remove the excess skin and fat that cause bags. If the patient should need to fill in hollow spots under the eyes, Dr. Livingston can utilize the same lower eyelid incision to transfer fat. Afterward, the incisions will be closed with removable or dissolvable sutures.

To correct dark circles beneath the eyes, a chemical peel ("facial skin peel") or laser resurfacing may also be necessary in conjunction with eyelid surgery.

The Results:

Although eyelid surgery is a quick, safe, and simple procedure, bruising and swelling will still be present after surgery for 5-7 days. During this time, a cold compress and lubricating ointments should be applied to the eyelids.

Final results from the procedure could take 6-12 months, but patients will notice a more rejuvenated appearance in just a few weeks following their procedure. With long-lasting results, eyelid surgery can leave patients looking years younger.
