Is a Buttock Augmentation Right for Me?

If you’re unhappy with the shape of your buttock or are looking to increase the size, this surgery can help. The procedure, also known as gluteal augmentation, uses fat grafting, implants or a combination of both to increase the size and fullness of the buttock.

Both men and women alike seek out buttocks augmentation surgery, and the recent trend is expected to continue into 2015. The procedure can include autologous fat transfer or implants that create a fuller figure. Depending on your body type, augmentation may be the best solution for creating curves and establishing better body balance.

Who Should Receive a Buttocks Augmentation?

Although buttocks augmentation surgery is far more common among women, the procedure is surging among men as well. In 2013, buttocks augmentation procedures increased in popularity by a staggering 58 percent. Both genders tend to want a healthier look, although women are more likely to also ask for curvier results in order to make their silhouettes more proportionate.

Buttocks augmentation procedures are best pursued by people who:

  • Can’t achieve the results they want through diet and exercise alone
  • Seek a more balanced, proportionate look
  • Want fuller, bigger or more projected buttocks
  • Desire a smaller or more sculpted buttocks
  • Need to correct asymmetry between buttocks
  • Are healthy and have the proper amount of time to recover
  • Have realistic expectations

Scheduling an initial consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon will help you gauge whether or not you qualify as a candidate for buttocks implants and, if so, which of the available options best suit your needs.

The Buttocks Augmentation Procedure

How buttocks augmentation surgery proceeds depends on numerous factors that vary from patient to patient, such as:

  • Skin type, particularly elasticity
  • The presence of excess skin
  • Whether or not liposuction is necessary
  • Desired results

The two most popular procedures are implants and buttocks lifts with analogous fat transfers. Implants require incisions and installation of silicone structures, while the shape of a buttocks lift is created from processed fat taken from other parts of the body using liposuction. Both create fuller looks, but patient anatomy and goals dictate which technique is ideal.

The silicone implants for the buttocks function similarly to those for the breasts. Incisions are made along the natural crease between the two hemispheres to minimize visible scarring, though alternate sites at the top or bottom of the buttocks may be used. Once the procedure has wrapped, the implants themselves will rest between the pelvic bone and the gluteal muscle.

Implants work best for individuals who desire a more rounded appearance, or who lack the body fat necessary for a lift procedure.

Brazilian Butt Lifts

Analogous fat – or fat that has been removed from other regions of the same body – is liposuctioned out. It is then injected into the buttocks, and the sites themselves may be obscured by swimsuits and clothing. Following this, the fat is layered slowly and carefully until the desired shape has been achieved.

Buttocks lifts, also known as Brazilian butt lifts, are usually performed on patients who need more reshaping and sculpting rather than rounding. Individuals who have lost a lot of weight prior to the procedure, for example, typically benefit from this approach rather than an implant.

A Word of Warning

It needs to be noted that some plastic surgeons purport to offer silicone injections as an option for buttocks augmentation. These are unsafe and must be avoided at all costs. A licensed, board-certified professional will only perform the two approaches known to be safe and healthy. The best results are always the ones that leave patients with the highest possible peace of mind when it comes to their overall well-being.

As with all cosmetic surgery, patients will have to spend time off their feet in order to fully recover. Recovery from buttocks augmentation procedures takes about three to four weeks, and results may not completely make themselves known for a time. Visible results can take anywhere from two weeks for lifts involving liposuction fat to three months for implants, and scarring is minimized and easily obscured.

Patients usually return home a few hours after surgery. Support garments are almost always required to help the body adjust to its new shape; the doctor will outline how long they will need to be worn, though it’s usually two to three weeks for both implants and fat transfers. Failure to do so may result in sitting that shifts and misshapes the buttocks, and individuals who have undergone fat transfers are most at risk.

Swelling and bruising are all normal elements of the recovery process. It may take weeks for these to fully heal but they should not be interpreted as a sign of injury or that the procedure failed. Follow the post-op instructions of your surgeon in order to make a full and timely recovery.
