Are Chemical Peels Right for Me?

Chemical peels are a non-surgical solution to freshen and rejuvenate the texture of skin by removing the damaged outer layers. The procedure can be performed with a light, medium or deep penetration depending on the degree of wrinkling. They are relatively inexpensive and involve very little pain or recovery time.

Chemical Peels

As we age, our skin can be damaged by exposure to the sun, heat, free radicals and other harmful elements that cause wrinkles. A chemical peel can make an individual look years younger. Chemical peels smooth the texture of the skin by removing the outer layers and encouraging the formation of new skin cells and collagen. Chemical peels can be performed with a light, medium or deep penetration depending on the degree of wrinkling.

Sun exposure, acne or the simple process of aging can leave skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred. To achieve smoother, younger looking skin, chemical peels are a non-surgical solution to freshen and rejuvenate the texture of skin by removing the damaged outer layers.

A chemical peel, also called chemexfoliation or derma peeling, is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of skin. Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on the neck, décolleté and hands. A chemical peel does not replace a facelift, but is a great rejuvenating procedure for people who have sun damage, which may have caused premature aging or threatening to turn into full-blown skin cancer. Chemical peels are relatively inexpensive and involve very little pain or recovery time compared to surgical procedures.

A chemical peel can improve many conditions on the face including:

  • Acne or acne scars
  • Age and liver spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Irregular skin pigmentation
  • Rough skin and scaly patches
  • Small visible blood vessels
  • Scars
  • Sun-damaged skin

As with all facial procedures, a healthy and motivated patient with realistic expectations are prerequisites. Understanding the procedure and the recovery are essential to a successful final result. Dr. Livingston will ask a number of questions about your health, lifestyle and goals to determine the best chemical peel and depth of penetration.

Following the procedure, skin will initially appear red and then return to its normal color within 45 minutes. Any mild flaking or peeling is usually complete in four to seven days. We may recommend a special moisturizer or facial product to enhance and prolong the chemical peel’s results.
