One of the newest trends in cosmetic surgery is the Brazilian butt lift. Individuals, usually women, who elect for this procedure, seek a more balanced, projected shape. Others would like to correct a defect such as unevenness between buttocks, or better proportioning with the breasts. Although a common procedure, it’s experienced a significant surge in popularity over the past couple of years. Anyone considering a Brazilian butt lift should know the basics of what the surgery entails.

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

Here’s a quick synopsis: A Brazilian butt lift is a cosmetic surgery that extracts body fat from a patient’s body (usually the thighs, back, flanks or abdomen) and re-injects it into the buttocks – thus creating a more contoured, prominent result. The amount of fat needed usually depends on a patient’s individual goals, the amount available fat and the desired final size.

Sometimes a patient will need additional fat transfer injections, but this depends on the success of the procedure, the surgeon’s advice and the patient’s overall satisfaction.

How is a Brazilian butt lift different from butt implants?

Brazilian butt lifts aren’t the only way to achieve a more round, defined butt. The more traditional butt augmentation uses gluteal implants as opposed to fat injections. During this procedure, a surgeon will make an incision along a patient’s buttocks and insert a durable silicone implant above or below the gluteus maximus muscle. The surgeon will then close the incision and set the patient along in the recovery process. Depending on the patient’s figure and the doctor’s expert opinion, liposuction may be involved as well.

Should I choose butt implants or a Brazilian butt lift?

Choosing the right surgery for your body is important. While it’s easy to think augmentation might produce a more effective, immediate outcome, don’t underestimate the power and effectiveness of the Brazilian butt lift. Here are a few items to consider:

  • Brazilian butt lifts are often more natural in both appearance and feel. Butt implants can appear less natural, and do take a while to adjust to physically.
  • There is some risk of implant and infection with butt implants. This risk is not present with Brazilian butt lifts.
  • Implant patients are required to have a follow-up procedure 10 to 12 years following their butt augmentation surgery. Brazilian butt lifts may only require additional injections a few years down the line.
  • The recovery process following a butt augmentation surgery can take up to three weeks. Patients who receive Brazilian butt lifts can return to normal activity in about three days. Please note that with both procedures, some degree of bruising and swelling will occur. It’s a normal element of the healing process.
  • Brazilian butt lifts are almost always the most cost-effective option over butt implants, though the results prove just as effective.
