WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT A SECOND BREAST SURGERY

Breast augmentation revision surgery is an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. The duration of surgery can be from thirty minutes to two hours depending on the required correction.

Recovery varies from patient to patient. Most patients return to daily responsibilities within two weeks after surgery. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least three weeks and with Dr. Livingston’s permission. Swelling and bruising should subside within three weeks as well.

After initial breast surgery, scar tissue may develop at the incision locations and around the implants. This scar tissue adds to the complexity of your second treatment. Dr. Livingston will require as much information as possible to formulate a revision plan to correct the issues which developed after your first surgery.

Capsular Contracture

This problem happens when scar tissue forms around breast implants, causing the breasts to feel abnormally hard. It may cause some discomfort as well. The complication is one of the more common reasons women seek breast revision surgery.

How can a breast revision satisfy me if the initial surgery did not?

This feeling is completely understandable. Although revision can fix many issues resulting from your initial surgery, the goal is to improve aesthetics safely and efficiently. Realistic expectations play an important role in achieving desired results. Too often the patient is over-promised and is not happy because expectations were not met. Can breast revision surgery correct asymmetry?

After augmentation, asymmetry (breasts are not equal size) may occur. This problem may be the result of poor technique but is often because of the way the implants settle. Existing asymmetry before initial surgery may continue if proper steps were not taken during the first procedure. Revision may include replacing one or both breast implants to achieve desired results. A breast lift may also be necessary.

Should I have breast revision surgery if my implants are old but still look great?

Breast implants need no replacement if there isn’t a problem with them. After your initial surgery, you should schedule regular mammograms to make sure the implant shell remains intact. However, if you feel discomfort or you notice a change in position or appearance, you should call your surgeon. Unless you’ve noticed a change in appearance or physical discomfort associated with your implants, they do not require replacement.
