Dress for Success: Looking and Feeling Good In Your Clothes
Pear, apple, hourglass, rectangular: our bodies come in many different shapes, types and sizes. However, there is no such thing as a “perfect body” – everyone has their own preference on how their own body should look like, and what they are attracted to. Everybody (and every body) has their own unique style and shape. Yet, realizing what best matches and looks good on your figure can have its own set of rewards and challenges.
If you’ve ever been guilty of looking the mirror and thinking: “I just do not look good” then you may need to think again. It may just not be you, it may be them. And by “them” – we mean your clothes. The way you dress depending on your body’s angles, size and shape can either come across very attractive, or less than flattering.
Before buying an outfit just because its pretty or it looks great on your best friend, try assessing your body shape and applying some do’s and don’ts when it comes to your wardrobe. When you look good in your clothes, not only will you feel better but your confidence can hit new heights. Check out our tips and tricks for your body type. Your new look and heightened confidence could just be a shirt change away!
Pear Shaped
Pear shaped individuals tend to have hips that are wider than their shoulders, with a well-defined waist and a little plump backside. Pear shapes curvy waists elegantly match with their shoulders and arms.
Basic Guidelines:
Balance out your hips and shoulders by using color, pattern and layered fabrics to add volume to your shoulders. Keep attention off your hips by avoiding eye-catching colors and layered or baggy clothing there.
Clothing Do’s:
A-line skirts, dark-colored pants, wide legged pants, jackets that fall at the waist, strapless dresses, ruffled shirts, boat necked or square necked tops
Clothing Don’ts:
Cargo pants, harem pants, printed bottoms, heavy or flashy belts
Inverted Triangle
Those who have an inverted triangle shape typically have wider shoulders than hips, with a narrow waist. This also means that your legs and waist are going to be your showstoppers.
Basic guidelines:
By accentuating your waist, hips and legs with form-fitting items, your body will look more even from top to bottom. Wearing brighter colors and patterns around the waist and hips and keeping plainer looks around your shoulders and chest can make the eye see the most flattering aspects to your shape as a whole.
Clothing Do’s:
Bottoms that are colorful or printed, layered skirts or wide-legged pants, cinched-waist dresses and jackets
Clothing Don’ts:
Low-rise pants or skirts, wide-necked tops, tube tops, tank tops with thin straps
Rectangular
If you have hips, shoulders and a waist that are all similarly sized together then you are probably a rectangular shape. Typically individuals of this shape are on the slimmer side, however any sized individual with this shape will have the same outfit do’s and don’ts to bring out their most flattering side. Get ready to work those arms and legs!
Basic guidelines:
Create curvier hips and chest by adding layers and details in those places. Go for clothes that have shape to them, and avoid boxy shapes.
Do’s:
Colorful and printed pants and skirts, peplum skirts, long jackets, rushed or ruffled tops, collared shirts, well-fitting bras and camis with a little padding
Don’ts:
Clingy fabrics, baggy clothing, low-rise pants or skirts, boxy shirts or jackets, cropped tops
Apple
Apple shaped individuals tend to have slim hips, broad shoulders and wide ribs, with legs usually on the slender side. Apples notoriously have beautiful legs, and you can’t show them off enough!
Basic guidelines:
Lengthen your midsection by wearing low necklines, supporting your bust and adding detail at the waistline. Wide-legged bottom will even out the width of your shoulders.
Do’s:
Trouser jeans, boot cut pants, shorter skirts, empire waistlines, V-necks and scoop necks, cinched waist blouses, belts, pointed high heels
Don’ts:
Tight pants, ruffled or puffy sleeves, shoulder pads, bright colors and patterns on top
Hourglass
Hourglasses have similarly proportioned shoulders and hips, with a smaller and well-defined waist, making the shoulders, hips and bust the featured areas for flattering looks.
Basic guidelines:
Maintain the look of your proportionate figure by calling equal attention to your top and your bottom. Avoid clothing that hides your waistline or makes it appear lower than it is.
Do’s:
Skinny jeans, fitted dresses, wrap dresses, high-waisted skirts, belts at the waist, cinched tops, lightweight fabrics, scoop necks and V-necks, rounded heels and peep toes
Don’ts:
High-waisted bottoms, A-line dresses or tops, high necked shirts, billowy blouses, short skirts (they’ll make your hips look wider than your shoulders), double-breasted jackets, anything baggy
