Botox is a fast, convenient, and lasting way to diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Also known as a neuromodulator, Botox helps to disrupt the communication between the nerve and muscles, which in turn smooths and relaxes dynamic wrinkles. As it is a minimally invasive procedure, Botox is sought by patients from all over the aging spectrum.

At Livingston Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher K, Livingston has been serving the southeastern area of Texas with beautiful, natural cosmetic results for many years. He is trained in Botox injections and will customize your results according to your individual desires.

Here, Dr. Livingston explains what Botox is, where it can be used most effectively, and what the injection process entails.

What is Botox?

Botox is generally made of Botulinum Toxin A, a substance that disrupts communication between the nerves and muscles. Movement is prevented when this communication is blocked, and therefore the appearance of dynamic lines and creases are diminished in the targeted area.

While Botox does help to stop facial movements, this does not mean that you won’t be able to move your face. You’ll still be able to make the same movements as before, just without the lines.

Where Can Botox Be Applied?

Dr. Livingston will personally administer Botox injections on the forehead, glabellar area (between the brows), outer eyes area (“crow’s feet), and in the neck area to reduce the appearance of muscle bands. Often times, patients choose Botox injections to enhance their facial symmetry. Dr. Livingston can also inject smaller amounts of Botox into the lip area to improve the appearance of “smoker’s lines,” along with creating an upturned “lip flip” effect.

Procedural Steps

During your initial consultation, Dr. Livingston will examine the concerned areas of aging, discuss your personal aesthetic goals, and explain what you can expect during your procedures. You can then decide if you would like to continue with your injections. You will never feel pressured to make a decision that you aren’t ready to make.

Botox injections are performed conveniently in the office without the need for anesthesia, but Dr. Livingston may apply a numbing cream to help relieve pain. Dr. Livingston will inject several units of the solution into the marked areas. The procedure can take up to 20 minutes to complete based on the number of areas being treated. You are free to go about your usual activities immediately after your injections are finished. Minimal swelling and bruising may occur, but these will alleviate quickly and can easily be covered with makeup.
