Eyelifts vs. Facelifts: Which Is Right for Me?

Eyelifts and facelifts are sometimes combined into a single procedure, so it’s understandable that you might be confused about which option is right for you. It is, however, important to know the difference between these two procedures. Some patients need only one and not the other, so being informed about the unique functions of both operations can help you avoid unnecessary risks and expenses. Though only a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon can truly advise you on which surgery (or surgeries) you need, the following information will help guide you in making the right choice:

What Does an Eyelift Do?

Eyelift surgery is primarily used to treat a condition known as ptosis. When a patient has ptosis, his or her upper eyelids chronically “droop” to such a degree that his or her vision is impaired. While ptosis is most commonly associated with age-related skin and muscle laxity, it sometimes occurs in younger people as well. Poor development of the muscles around the eye during childhood and rare conditions like myasthenia gravis can cause the eyelids of young adults or even children to droop.

If you have eyes that look tired or sad all of the time but your face is otherwise in good condition, then you probably need an eyelift rather than a facelift. (Note that there is also a form of eye lift surgery available to treat puffy under-eye lids.)

What Does a Facelift Do?

Facelift surgery is used to correct age-related issues primarily affecting the middle portion of the face. During a facelift, the facial skin and underlying tissues are carefully tightened, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles and eliminating saggy skin. If you have deep wrinkles, crow’s feet, jowls, and hollow areas under your cheeks, then a facelift is probably right for you.

As we’ve mentioned before: droopy eyelids, wrinkles, jowls, and other signs of facial aging often occur together. If you are battling multiple issues that affect the appearance of your eyes, face, and neck, then you should talk to your surgeon about the possibility of combining your facelift with an eyelift and necklift. Combining surgeries in this manner can cut down on costs and healing time while also minimizing the risk of complications.
