Tips for Recovering from Plastic Surgery During the Summer
Summer is when businesses slow down, and people like to take vacations. It’s also a good time for recovering from plastic surgery. With procedures requiring extended healing periods like breast augmentation and tummy tuck surgery, patients often need summer vacation for recovery. If you are planning cosmetic surgery during the summer months, here are a few tips to enhance the recovery process.
Keep Cool
Your recovery will include compression garments and bandages, especially in the early stages. These added layers will not bode well for higher temperatures. Plan on staying indoors with the A/C set at a comfortable temperature. Have others go out to run errands while you stay inside and heal. Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing with thin, soft fabric like cotton that can breathe.
Stay Out of the Sun
The sun is not your friend during your recovery, so stay out of it. Your incisions are more prone to sun damage during the healing process and exposure to sun rays can increase the risk of visible scarring. You may be more susceptible to sunburn right after surgery as well, especially in areas where the skin was operated on. As an added precaution put on sunscreen whether you’re inside or outside.
Drink Plenty of Water
There is no beverage better for your skin than water. It is also the best thing to drink for hydration. Drink plenty of water to help your skin heal and reduce the risk of dehydration. Proper hydration will aid in the healing process and help reduce post-surgery symptoms.
Stay Out of the Water
Avoid swimming pools, lakes, spas and hot tubs to reduce the risk of infection. Your surgeon will instruct you on bathing and showers (with showers being the optimal choice), but swimming in standing water is a no-no.
Slow Down
Recovery means slowing down your lifestyle so your body can heal. If you must work from home, don’t overdo it. Make plans beforehand to ensure coverage of all important tasks during your recovery period.
Summertime is also a great time to have fun. Plan activities that are practical from the comfort of your home, such as board games with family and friends or informal dinner parties at home in comfortable attire.
